“Mathematics is the art of giving the same name to different things” — Henri Poincaré

Big Idea

The essence of algebra is the ability to represent unknown quantities using variables.

In this lesson, students will develop deeper understanding of algebra by first understanding how to represent known quantities using variables.

They will do so through drawing and modelling their very own monster eyes.

Lesson Takeaways

By the end of the class, students will have understood:

  1. Relating words to specific and generalised numbers
  2. Using letters to represent variables
  3. The nature and application of abstractions
